Campus Expansion Continues Over Winter Break

New entrance to campus to accommodate construction during the 2020 Project. With the arrival last month of heavy construction equipment, UC Merced’s ambitious campus expansion is beginning to unfold.

We anticipate the first facilities will open in three annual phases beginning in Fall 2018. In total, 13 new buildings as well as supporting infrastructure will be added to the campus.

Over the winter break, the campus community can expect the following:

  • Rough grading of the expansion site. The major milestone will be the installation of a set of construction trailers.
  • Connectivity loss. On Thursday, Dec. 22, the construction team will relocate a primary campus network fiber connection. This fiber line — a backbone used to connect to all Internet services — requires the team to cut the existing line, pull the fiber out of the conduit, reroute the line and then resplice to establish connectivity back to CENIC, UC Merced’s Internet provider.

Because the project is complex, all campus network connectivity will be unavailable for up to six hours. The work is scheduled to begin at 2 a.m. Dec. 22.

For more details, please visit the 10-Day construction look ahead page on the 2020 website.

  • Road work. Between Dec. 21 and 23, the construction team will work along Lake Road, adding a construction-dedicated access entrance to campus. The team will have traffic control measures on site to ensure traffic moves smoothly. For more details, visit the 10-Day Construction Look Ahead feature on the project website.

The team members understand that the project’s construction activity will impact you, and they greatly appreciate your patience as they try to accommodate the needs of the campus community during this period.
