May 25, 2016

Rendering of UC Merced's planned Downtown Campus Center. A block party and groundbreaking is scheduled on June 8. Staff and faculty members, students and community members are invited to join Chancellor Dorothy Leland on June 8 for a block party and groundbreaking for UC Merced’s Downtown Campus Center.

The family-friendly event, from 5 to 7 p.m., will take place at the intersection of 18th and N streets. Festivities will include food vendors, activities for children, music and more.

When completed, the three-story, 67,400-square-foot Downtown Campus Center will allow UC Merced to consolidate a number of business functions and administrative services that are currently scattered across various leased facilities in and around the county and city.

In addition to improving efficiency and reducing costs for the university, the Downtown Campus Center will bring approximately 370 people to the downtown area when it reaches full occupancy, providing a significant boost to businesses in the vicinity.

The block party and groundbreaking event is free and open to the public. Campus community members are welcome to bring their family and friends.
