"Risky Business" Event Set for Jan. 17

December 10, 2012

When organizing an event or launching a new program, there is a chance that something could go awry. Thinking ahead about what could go wrong and developing a plan to deal with those possibilities is known as risk management.

To help faculty and staff understand the basics of risk management, UC Merced’s Risk Services department is hosting “Risky Business” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 17.

The goal of the free event is to increase awareness of risk management and provide employees with resources and information, said campus Risk Manager Carol Castillo.

Risk management “is about examining your plan from a critical thinking standpoint and identifying what can go wrong. Then, you think about the best solutions. (Risk management) is really a decision and planning tool.”

Participants may attend up to four workshops. Topics include risk and liability in event planning, fleet operations safety, workers compensation and travel safety. A webinar, “Courageous Risks in Higher Education: Everyone Is a Risk Manager,” will be shown during lunch.

Participants must attend one workshop in order to receive lunch. Registration is required to attend. For more information, email Risk Services or call 209-228-4705.
