TSA PreCheck Program Coming to UC Merced in April

March 2, 2016

Representatives with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will visit UC Merced on April 26-28 to enroll people in the agency’s PreCheck program.

Approximately 165 people signed up for the PreCheck program. If an additional 85 people sign up, the TSA will waive the fee it charges to the campus for its visit. Meanwhile, the TSA will provide a website link that is scheduled to go live March 12. Those who already responded to Travel Services' survey and new applicants can sign up for appointments that meet their availability on the TSA site. Signups are open to everyone including faculty and staff members, students and their family members and members of the general public.

The TSA PreCheck program offers travelers a faster process when going through airport security. During the screening process, PreCheck allows participants to leave on their shoes, lightweight jackets and belts. They also can leave laptops and compliant liquids in carry-on bags. More than 120 airports and about a dozen airlines participate in the PreCheck program. Enrollment costs $85 and is valid for five years. PreCheck is a personal expense and is not reimbursable by the university.

TSA PreCheck is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents. Each approved participant receives a known traveler number (KTN), which can be included on future airline reservations and boarding passes.
