University Friends Circle (UFC) meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Branding Iron Restaurant, 640 W. 16th St., Merced.

History Professor David Torres-Rouff will present an ongoing project that uses digitized data from the U.S. Census during the 19th century to offer new avenues for thinking about Merced’s earliest years. Admission is $20 for members and $25 for guests. For information on joining the UFC or to RSVP, email ufc@ucmerced.edu. Reservation deadline is noon Thursday, Jan. 12.
