Alumna Aguilar is Senator's Guest at Trump's Address

March 2, 2017

Media Highlights

First-term California Sen. Kamala Harris announced Monday that UC Merced Ph.D. graduate Yuriana Aguilar would be her guest at President Donald Trump's first address to Congress. Several other Democrats did likewise, inviting immigrants and other guests "meant as counterpoints to Trump's policies," McClatchy's Michael Doyle wrote.

The president continues to dominate one news cycle after another, and UC Merced faculty experts are being called on often to provide perspective. Professors Carolyn Dicey-Jennings and Teenie Matlock were both quoted by WIRED in response to Trump's media survey earlier this month, and Professor Gregory Wright commented on the president's economic strategy for Marketplace.

On a non-presidential note, Professor Josh Viers was quoted extensively in the New York Times about California's aging dams.

The campus has made local headlines recently, as well. The Merced Sun-Star and its sister papers wrote about the campus considering switching to electric buses, our STEM students visiting elementary schools in Los Banos, the campus playing host to a forum about immigration and the UC Merced women's basketball team claiming its third straight Cal Pac Conference championship. Go Bobcats!
