Safety — It’s Everyone’s Job

January 16, 2013

UC Merced's Department of Public Safety is responsible for the safety and security of the campus and the campus community, but everyone plays an important role in maintaining a safe place to learn, work and live. By following a few guidelines — such as securing your personal property and reporting suspicious activity and suspicious persons right away — you can help deter criminal activity.

Here are a few tips:

  • When possible, leave the building with a co-worker;
  • If you know you are going to work late, move your vehicle to a safe and convenient location near an exit;
  • Be aware of your surroundings;
  • Have your car keys and cell phone in hand when exiting the building in case of emergency;
  • If you see something suspicious, call 9-1-1 from a cell phone, 9-9-1-1 from a campus landline, or 209-228-2677 immediately; and
  • Be confident. Make safe decisions. Be a great witness.

Launched last fall, Text-a-Tip allows students, faculty and staff to send anonymous tips about non-emergency security concerns by texts or email messages from their cell phones. Simply text 209-626-8826 or email ucmerced@tipnow.com. To remain anonymous, your signature should be disabled before sending a tip.
