Staff Assembly Partners With Local Artist for Community Project

An unglazed ceramic poppy is shown on a colorful background.The UC Merced Staff Assembly invites campus community members to put their creative flair on display in the Merced community by glazing ceramic poppies for a community art project.

Local artist Monika Modest will conduct glazing workshops at various campus locations for staff and faculty to participate in the project. The glazed ceramic poppies will be permanently installed at Bob Hart Square in downtown Merced.

A $5 contribution to participate in the project pays for art supplies. The remaining proceeds benefit the Valley Crisis Center and Room at the Inn. The Valley Crisis Center provides assistance for domestic violence survivors in Merced, and Room at the Inn, a program of the Merced County Rescue Mission, offers temporary and permanent shelter for homeless families with children in Merced County. Cash or checks will be accepted with checks payable to Monika Modest.

Glazing takes place on the following dates:

  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, The Promenade, Suite M conference room
  • 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, Mondo Building, Granite Conference Room
  • 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, Castle Commerce Center, Redwood Conference Room
  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, Social Sciences and Management Building, Campus Art Yard
